Never tell an engineer "No"... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: 9-3SC and surgical removal of factory roof rails..., Ron H, Mon, 22 May 2006 10:55:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There is an old saying that "arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig, you both get dirty and smelly but the pig rather enjoys it."
After just getting off the telephone with the Parts Guy at my local Dealership, it appears it can be easily done.
The parts catalog for the Sport-combi lists two different sets of trim strips for the roof, one for cars with factory installed roof rails and one for cars without.
The parts catalog lists two main roof pans, but the difference is sunroof not roof rails. The catalog only lists one set of side roof pieces. So it appears the roof construction is identical whether the car came equipped with roof rails or not.
Opening the trim strip flip-up doors on a non-roof rail equipped Sport-Combi reveals a threaded stud that the accessory roof rail must screw into. I am assuming (dangerous I know) that the factory roof rail must screw/bolt into thre identical studs welded into the roof groove beneath the trim strip.
Based upon parts offered, it appears these rails can be easily unbolted and different trim strips snapped in the grooves. Cost of the "no factory roof rails" trim strips were quoted at $93 each, shipped from Sweden pre-painted, no US stock for these parts. Delivery taking about two weeks.
I might give this a try and report back on how it goes. Since the Dealer was willing to knock the $250 cost of the factory roof rails off the price, maybe they will purchase and install these $186 trim strip parts for the sticker cost of the factory rails, and place the removed rails into their stock.
