I have NEVER heard of too high an octane resulting in unburned fuel and damaged catalytic converters. All you're doing is wasting money, at worst. The ECU is programmed for a specific octane rating. If the fuel has a higher rating, the ECU cannot take advantage of it. If its lower, the ECU will retard the timing to compensate and you will lessen performance.
You can mix all you want, but cheap gas isn't the best idea. If you've been putting in the cheap stuff, you've been depriving yourself of some rather beneficial additives. You might also fill the tank with some of the Top Tier stuff, if you get a chance. You'll notice the difference even though there is no difference in octane rating.
