The Aero's Sound (engine/exhaust)

The 06' Aero certainly has a very sport sound and growl to it. However, at highway speeds, the level and tone is way too much for me to tolerate for long periods of time. I have found myself popping the Sentronic into a lower gear thereby upping the RPMs to around 2800 (instead of the loud 2000-2200) range. Upshifting doesn't seem to do too much. Although I get a bit annoyed at the sound during city driving, the length of local trips to work, the store, etc. makes it much more tolerable so I don't mess w/ the gears.
Any suggestions on how to modify and get a quieter sound at the RPM governed by the auto transmission? What are the consequences of driving at the higher RPM (2800-3200) for more sustained periods? Lower gas? Engine? Transmission? Thanks!
