My '07 SS has essentially the same trans (if not exactly) and the 1-2 notchyness is far more prounounced when ambient temps are below about 60 deg F and the trans is really rough on initial start below 40 deg F.

Note that Road and Track referred to this trans as "notchy and inconsistent" in one of their reviews (interestingly displayed prominently in a special display on the floor at a local SAAB dlr).

Thus, I think there is an element of truth to the "normal" assessment by the dlr, however, at least in my case the trans is now into the tolerable range through a combination of adjustment and refining my shift technique to accomodate its "needs".

A cable adjustment appeared to help in my case move it from annoying to tolerable/good. I had to tell the dealer that it worked for another car (which was true) to get them to agree to try it. I am grateful that they were willing to do it.

Increase in ambient temps above 70 may have also played a part (works much better in summer). People who live in Cal will probably never notice the issue. A technique that worked better for me was to shift at or above 3000 rpms with a slight pause in between gears and "ease in" approach as I feel the shifter resist slightly going to 2nd (giving it a little time for gears to synchronize before going in). Downshift from 3rd to 2nd appears to be aided by braking slightly before moving the shifter into 2nd. Other things to check include the master cylinder (booted plunger inside car that the clutch pedal presses on) and rest of clutch hydraulics for leaks.

Sensitivity to temperature could be due to the mounting of the shift linkage on top of the engine but that is just a hunch.
