The best tires are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup. These are racing tires with a dot approval. They come stock on high end sports cars like Porsche. I've run mine on my Viggen for 2 summers and clocked up 7k miles plus a couple autocross events and still have a 32nd or so before the wear markers.
Very tech tires. Outer compound is the race formula, and inner treads are the performance. You won't get them to "heat" with normal driving, so they wear better than you'd think. On the track once you get them heated enough, they'll get gummy and pull paint off the asphalt..literally. I even found when they are gummy, you can stand on the brakes and the anti-locks won't even kick on because the tires won't slide and my brakes aren't strong enough on the Viggen.
But, they're only good in rain when you first get them. It doesn't take long before you have to watch for hydroplaning. The other downside is that they are seriously sticky tires. When doing tight turning (full turn locks), you can feel the car fighting... for me that eventually resulted in a cracked mount.
Not the most practical tire, but definately the best as far as streetable race tires.
