I never said I thought it did look like the yoke (could NOT for the life of me remember the term), but that IS what Saab intended with the plastic (I belive it says so in the brochure).
However, I do say that I don't believe it is so very uncomfortable. I tend to grip mine where the wheel flares out (thumb pads against it), so it seems ok to me.
The good news is if it bothers you so much, you can always replace it.
Sorta like wheels and tires, to me.
