My financial advisor's comments prety much echo what you said.
Whether you squirrel money away in your sock drawer so you can pay cash for a new car, or make a downpayment and finance the remainder of the purchase, or make a down payment and lease the car, the overall cost is about the same.
as a Finance Prof used to say, the financial markets (although not perfect) are relatively efficient. If one of the three optins was significanlty better than the other two, the others have to adapt to eliminate the advantage, or cease to exist.
The one big change that will impact the Lease Market is the elimination of "incentivized leases", meaning no more artificailly high residuals just to promote a low monthly lease payment. None of the auto manufacturers, regardless of continent of origin, can afford this foolishness any more.
