Technically the engine is built by Holden, a GM subsidiary in Australia. It's common to the Cadillac SRX and CTS and the Opel Insignia in Europe. Engine control is Bosch Motronic and the turbo was developed by Saab for Saab.
XWD is by Haldex which also supplies systems to Volvo and BMW (Audi uses Torsen). The Saab XWD is a more current (advanced) version but I'd expect it would be just as reliable as the systems made for other makers.
I just rec'd a note from my dealer last week notifying me that it will be consolidating its 4 locations into 3. Yes, one drawback to owning a Saab (or any other niche car brand) is the scarcity of dealers. On the flip side there are a fair number of independent repair shops serving the market.
You should be able to drive some hard bargains but most of the manufacturer incentives are currently on remaining '08 inventory. There's an '08 TurboX with 1,500 miles on it listed for $29K at my local dealer. That's a $25K haircut in a year and it's essentially the same as an '09 Aero XWD.
