The Castrol Syntec 5W40 is a good oil, but it is GM-LL-B-025 certified. The B is important because that indicates it is long-life certified by GM for Diesel use. Castrol Syntec 0W30 is GM-LL-A-025 certified for long-life use in gasoline engines.
I bought some Syntec 5W40 for my 9-5, and I think it will work fine for that application with 5K oil changes. As a practical matter, you can probably use it in your 9-3SS, but you can't rely on the SID to monitor the oil quality. I would change it at 5K intervals in the 9-3SS to be safe.
