We all accept that only a specific air filter fits our cars. We accept that we have many choices for gas. For oil, it used to be that almost anything worked. Now, we should accept that fact that only a few oils meet the specs.
Since many only change the oil once a year, you might as well do it right. Saab says to use GM-LL-A-025 spec oil for gas engines. In a bind, Saab says to use A3/B3 oil but most/many GM-LL-A-025 oils are also A3/B3 oil. Just plan ahead and buy the right oil.
In Europe, many oils meet the specs. In the US, few do. As most know they include:
Mobil 1 0W-40 (many places have it, many Wal Marts do)
Castrol Syntec 0W-30 European Formula (only at Autozone)
Total Quartz Energy 9000 0W-30 (a few smaller stores, Michigan and Ohio, some VW dealers, online)
LubiMoly (forgot which weight, bavauto.com may have it)
A3/B3 oils include the rare Valvoline SynPower 5W-30 MST (MST variant is very hard to find). There are also a rare variants by Pennzoil. Some Total oils are A3/B3.
It rarely gets above 75F so I was thinking of converting to Castrol Syntec 0W-30. However, I have a lot of Mobil 1 stockpiled. It's also cheap. I got enough for 4 years for about $2.80/quart after rebates and sales.
