Ripped of??

I have a 2003 Linear with about 53K miles on it. Last week, the "check engine" light came on with no accompanying message on the SID - I didn't notice anything different with how the car runs.
I took it to the local dealership. It turns out there was a problem with the oxygen sensor. When the service advisor called, it sounded to me like it's a minor issue (translate small job!) and they had the part in stock, so I told them to go ahead and replace it. I was surprised when the bill came out to $484.67 ($87.00 cost of part, $397.67 cost of labor). I guess the lesson learned is to ask exactly how much both parts and labor are going to cost before giving the go ahead for the future...
For now, what I am trying to understand is:
a) In brief, what is the function of this oxygen sensor? How critical is it?
and
b) Does the above bill make sense? Is the part that time-consuming to replace?
Thanks to anyone who can offer any insight on this!
