you would not believe this...but...i just not even 20 minutes ago picked my 05 9-3ss up from a place called ConnTECH in warwick RI...they specialize in fixing saabs....
here's the deal...two weeks ago i went to start my car, and it was cold, it started after a couple of times...i knew i needed a new battery...started it off we go.....next day 8degrees outside...go to start and car turns and nothing...go give it a jump from my neighbor, with a Dodge Ram 2500, with dual batteries....sounded like it was gonna start then, my key wouldn't turn in ignition...did all the saab forums, read it could be my ISM(ignition switch module, $124. pretty easy DIY, just a few screws some unplugging)so i tried, taking my ISM apart very carefully and cleaned it with alcohol...put it back together and couldn't still get my key to budge...on the back of the ISM, if you are careful, you can get a TINY screwdriver and push back the lever to get the key to go to start position....did that, my car still wouldn't start...also forgot to tell you, i had put in a new battery the next day, before i went to get the ISM...anyway...my radio wouldn't work, my digital display in front wouldn't work, i think but can't remember,my dashboard did light up with all the normal stuff....so i had it flatbedded to CONNTECH in RI....
What was it...my CIM (control ignition module, column) part of the steering column, that apparently controls a bunch of stuff....along with the display so on and so forth....
the mechanics were GREAT, and i mean GREAT...with the CIM and i got a used one that came with two keys...once they change the CIM your original keys won't work, they need to be programmed to the car...anyways...i blew two different fuses near the battery, and two inside....and $737.90 later...
YEAH...my car is back in business...:)
now only to tell you, because prior to this, i was planning on buying a new SAAB(my 4th one) right after taxes got done, due to the fact that i have 146k on mine, bought it with 48k, and i drive about 100 miles a day between school and work...so i just put a deposit on a new one...this time a 2008 9-5, with navigation and it's beautiful...not necessarily the color i wanted or even model...but fell in LOVE with it when i saw and drove it...$11997 for it, it has 50,437 miles on it...was a one owner up to 43k,and maintained by Charles River Saab, was the oldest SAAB dealer in America, till 2 yrs ago, when Saab went bankrupt, then they closed it down and moved to Boston Volvo Village in Boston, two miles down and consolidated the two dealerships(both were owned by the same owner)....from 43k to 50437k it was used as a courtesy vehicle...can hardly wait till i get it next week :)
so your problem MOST likely is the CIM and the ignition switch of which i bought prior to them fixing the CIM and it still didn't work, so after the CIM was fixed and new ignition switch module....i have my baby up and running...
if you can get a GOOD saab mechanic...GO for it...but you MUST do the upkeep on SAABS....they will last forever if you do :) some small problems over all, just like any other used vehicle...but you'll love the driving a saab, and once i saab owner...probably will be forever a saab owner...
good news, this spring SAAB will be back in business...:) YEAH...good luck :) despina
