Maybe it's a generational thing, but I don't consider any Honda basic transportation. Maybe you are thinking about Hyundai. For the Honda, you pay more and you get more.
Personally, I think my Prelude is the best car I have owned yet. A '98 with 160k miles that still flies and handles like a slot-car, while my '99 9-3 with 47k can't stay out of the shop, can't keep up, and can't stop rattling.
I don't mean to flame, I still like my SAAB and this is after all a SAAB board. For me though, it is impossible to compare my SAAB with my Honda. The SAAB has flair and charm, and the Prelude runs/handles/rides/ages like I wish my SAAB could.
I haven't driven the 9-3SS yet, but I have high hopes for it. My fingers are crossed, and I hope it is all around a tighter car than the hatchbacks.
