I agree with your statement, but clearly you can tell when the turbo begins to kick. I had an allroad with tiptronic for a year and it had the worst "by design" (according to Audi) lag I have ever experienced with the auto tranny. So bad I took a loss and dumped the car I hated it so much. That car had plenty of engine, it just wasn't well co-ordinated. In the case of the A4 it needs a bigger engine if it can't get the car up and going. I would be curious to drive a chipped 1.8T A4 to see if it can get up and going.
