I don't think Saab is in trouble. I just bought a 2004 9-3 Aero and while it is not everything I want in a car it has a good combination of features. I have owned several saabs in the past (Sonnett, 900, 9000) so I am sort of a Saab loyalist but not a fanatic and think this car is the best built of the lot. My ideal car would be a balance of performance (more handling that raw power), able to hold 4 adults, I'd prefer a hatch, good safety record, reasonable economy (which drove me to look more favorably at turbo and super charged options) and reasonably attractive. I shopped the following cars, Saab 9-3 and 9-5, Volvo S60 and S80, BMW 330i, Infiniti G35, Audi A4 and A6. I ended up with the 9-3 as the best overall match to my list of requirements, the thing that pushed me over the edge to get it was the $4K in incentives for the car. Given what others paid with and without incentives I think Saab would be better served by looking at what they actually get per car and trying to adjust the price down and get out of the incentives game. Jaguar is trying this now on their entry car (X-series?) where the 2005 has more features and a lower price. An interview in Autoweek with a Jaguar exec said essentially they looked at what they actually sold the cars for and tried to move the MSRP to get more buyers to look at them.
