Scott: It's great that Saab is selling more cars at the moment, but the issue of long-term loyalty (and a base of Saabophiles) is still very important. It is an open question as to how loyal the purchasers of the 9-3SS will be (in terms of their next purcahses), and if so, what the basis of that loyalty will be. If they buy the car because they perceive it to be somewhat comparable to a BMW or A4--but costing less money--that may not be a sustainable market position, unless Saab has a major cost advantage vs. its competitors that allows it to be equally profitable at significantly lower real prices.
The ideal product strategy would address the requirements of Saab loyalists (who really do want to continue to buy Saabs--we complain because we are passionate about the brand), while also appealing to new buyers. For example, if Saab absoutely could not see its way to making a 9-3SS hatch, given the importance of utility as part of the core brand equity, they should have had a 9-3SS wagon available within 6 months of launch.
