I'm one of the "small percentage" that's very unhappy with the 6 speed. Rest of the car is great! I have an '03 Arc that has one. Saab only shipped it in the Arc for a few months before they dropped it citing "difficulties with supply". Now they have dropped it completely so I guess the "supply" must be really difficult ;)
Some people seem to be able to live with it but the 1-2 shift and now the 3-4 shift have audible synchro grinding and a real "catch" in the shift as they go into gear shifting up, shifting down seems ok which is wierd! It's a lot worse when cold and especially when the shifts are above 4000 rpm. Makes me crazy to the point I don't like even drving the car any more except on the freeway. I've still got my Classic 900T Conv so driving that instead. I never, ever, thought I'd have to say that the C900 Tranny was a good thing!
Saab Cars have been less than forthcoming on the problems with this transmission to the point where I'm not sure I'd buy another Saab despite being a 20+ year customer.
So far I've had, them pretending there isn't a problem, the shifter SI, new shifter assembly, new, supposedly specially reworked transmisson, special oil (from the VW dealer!).
The 6 speed is a great idea but watch out! Mines in Lemon Law Arbitration. Shifts pretty bad from day one on the origional tranny but took a month or two to get bad on the replacement unit.
