I guess I don't really think of 80K as "getting on in miles" for a Saab; it's barely broken in! It seems to me that if the problem were due to wear due to the engine's age, I'd see evidence of burning oil in the spark plugs, which would be fouled, or coming out the tailpipe; that is, if it's worn rings, or worn valve guides, I'd have those symptoms. The suggestion that I'm not seeing smoke because the oil is burning up in the catalytic converter is an interesting one, but it doesn't explain the fact that the compression is perfect, or the spark plugs unfouled. The oil loss started BEFORE the crankcase vent modification was done, and so it can't be a result of the modification. I appreciate greatly the suggestions so far, but remain stumped. Would torquing down the head bolts, as on person suggested, have any effect if I'm not seeing leaking around the head gasket?
