Yup, I'm the original owner, and I've always been very careful to treat the car (reasonably) gently. The miles are mostly highway miles, and I'm pretty fanatical about going easy on the car at LEAST until the engine's warm, etc. This car has enjoyed the life of luxury. I'm the car's only driver, except for the occasional valet or mechanic. I think (but correct me if I'm wrong) that if a valve guide had failed, I could get the car to smoke a bit by going down a hill with the car in gear and gravity pulling me along...oil would get sucked past the (bad) valve guide(s) into the combustion chamber, no? I've tried that, and no smoke. Also, no puff of smoke on starting on cold days. I'm getting around 22 miles per gallon (of gas!) pretty consistently.
I appreciate everyone's suggestions...they're giving me a lot to think about.
