The issue is caused by a flaw in the PCV system, which leads to accelerated breakdown of the engine oil. When you drive short trips and in cold weather the oil breakdown is exacerbated even more. When this is combined with long drain intervals you start to see sludge build up. This blocks the oil pickup screen and you get oil starvation of the engine -> broken engine. Semi-synth oil is more susceptible to this kind of breakdown than fully synthetic, and is another factor that increase the danger of sludge buildup.
So the logical solution, (until a better PCV fix comes along), is to remove the possibility of sludge build up, by using a better oil and changing it more frequently.
