Can't hurt. Probably doesn't help Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Sludge problem and oil volume?, R. Frist, Fri, 28 Jan 2005 18:54:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I believe that the sludge issue is primarily related to not frequent enough oil changes. Now, more oil may help some to dilute sludge, but I don't think it helps that much. I own a '97 9000 with a 5-quart sump - I know for a fact that the car is on it's second engine, the first engine dying at 45K due to sludge. Hey, the first 45K was a lease car! I wonder how many oil changes it had?
I would say that 5 quarts instead of 4 means that you might have a little more margin. But you can kill a 5 quart car without frequent oil changes.
Summary - change the oil frequently and regularly. It's cheap insurance. In the Old Days, we changed the oil every 3K miles. And recommended oil change intervals extended to 5K, 7.5K, 10K. Not just Saab, but most all cars. And interestingly, most all cars out there, not just Saabs, are showing sludge issues. I've heard of it on the vauntedly reliable Toyotas. With modern engines and modern oils, you can go further between changes. But how long? I guess we're finding out now.
Now, with modern engines and modern oils, I try and change the oil every 3K, but don't panic if it's 4K. But 7.5K? No way.
