First off, both are incredibly safe, and incredibly comfortable.
My first Volvo was an '82 240 DL - First car actually. This thing ran like a tank until about 75k miles.... then the plastic started falling off, then the master break cylinder went, and again, and again, and again. Over the course of it's last three years of life, leading up to a 145k mile graveside service, it would have a non-starting, stranding type event an average of once every three months. I was in college and broke, and a car payment was not an option, so I kept fixing what I had to.

Then I graduated. I managed the dream job which included a two year old 740 Wagon - company owned and maintained. This car did really well in comparison.. in fact I never remember anything other than routine maintenance and a tire blowing out when my boss failed to see a median strip that he took at 35 MPH perpendicularly.. .but that's another story.. However, they traded out every 60k miles, and frankly, my Volvo DL did well in its early days also.

My wife had the Volvo wagon that ended my relationship with the Sweedes for a while. She got it used with about 80k on it, and it just never ran right. Put it in drive, and sometimes it went, sometimes you had to try park again, and then drive. Sunroof fell of its track a couple times. Basically, the fit and finish was just never there. All that said, I loved to take trips in it. So comfortable, and so roomy all around.

But now, I have returned to Sweeden for my '01 9-5 Wagon. I am an enthusiast once again. The handling of the Saab is so superior. And keep in mind that my engine only has 185HP. The only place where I think the 9-5 falls short to the Volvo is that the V70 also has the XC model. Saab has to add an all wheel drive feature to the Wagon line up. Just giving us the Chevy Trailblazer rebadged doesn't satisfy Saab enthusiasts. I want a new 9-5X ... And I would buy it in a heart beat.

If you want all wheel drive, I like the Volvo over the Passat, but I still like the Saab the best. Oh, by the way, my other current car is a Grand Cherokee. When it snows, I still take the Saab.
