Resale value is not a huge issue for us. Both my wife and I come from families who drive their cars into the ground, and then keep going. My dad managed to get both a late 70's Pontiac station wagon and early 80's Sedan DeVille to over 200K miles before they finally gave up the ghost. My wife's dad got 150K miles on a early 80's Cutlass Supreme that was mainly subjected to city driving.

Whichever car we wind up buying, we plan on keeping it for 10+ years, easily.

From what I've learned, Saab and Volvo have identical free maintenance -- 3 years/36K miles.

The Subaru was dropped from our list for two reasons. The real reason was that we thought the ride was rougher than the rest, and at that price point we would rather have a Passat wagon. The trivial reason was that the Subaru doesn't have driver memory seats.
