Rear crank seal. That sucks.
But depending on how much it is leaking, you may be able to go a very long time.
The first thing I would do, after changing the oil, is make sure the oil level is a bit below the full mark. You might try using 3.5 quarts per change. That has helped a lot on other cars I've owned.
Otherwise, perhaps you can negotiate with Saab, if you can get the dealer to claim it was due to sludge. How much does Saab (or your indie) want to fix?
