When that desire for a new Saab, one that you get to pick the color and equipment of, one that's brand new with free maintenance and a full warranty, one with the latest safety features for your family, once you reach that point, then you'll have the choice of buying or leasing.
Have you bought a new car? Are you somewhere in life where it could be the car you really want and deserve? It doesn't sound like it from your post and it makes a big difference on your prespective on making the financial arrangements.
Once you decide that $30k new car belongs in your garage you have to navigate all the various rebate, financine and lease offers availible on that car. Saab doesn't make this easy. Programs change from month to month and Saab skews the picture towards leasing by stacking generous inencetives along with super low lease rates on some models. For awhile there was an extra $1,000 in price incenitives in favor of the lease combined with a low rate. Usual Saab practice has you giving up a little incentive money to get at the low lease rate.
For most of us that distills down to a monthly payment. And then leasing becomes even more attractive. Not everyone who leases really can't afford it otherwise, although that does highlight one of the major payment advantages for a lease, the lease payments on a new one are likely less than buying a 3-4 year old used one.
Another example I use is that the more expensive the car, the more money savvy the customer is, the more folks lease.
