I ran the numbers both ways before I decided to lease my '01 lpt wagon. Saab's support of the lease (basically 0% interest, just like today) made the residual value about equal to the loan value at the end of 4 years with similar monthly payments. By leasing I would have the option to purchase for $X or walk away. If I purchased I would owe about the same $X and hope I could work a deal if I wasn't happy with the vehicle after 4 years.
After almost 4 years I'm still pretty happy with the vehicle and I'm hopefull that SFSC may offer a little something to make buying the car even more attractive. But at this point I'm really glad to have the option -- something I wouldn't have if I had taken a loan and purchased the vehicle.
