FOr one thing, packaging the four coils in one single unit, as well as having to have critical circuitry up top of the engine means that a failure of the Saab DIC makes the entire engine stop cold. In an arrangement such as the audi and VW that you cited, the failure of a single coil does not shut down the entire engine( as well as likely lead to catylytic converter failure) and allows you to limp home and get it fixed ASAP. It also means that a single coil failure is not likely to make you a target for the traffic following you on the highway. As far as your theory that it might fail, wrong, It IS GOING to fail, it is the age and mileage that is not precisely known but it is going to fail. The heat is what gets to this unit.
after having three failures out of four in my Saabs I now carry a spare, and have little doubt that at some point, I too will be lifting the hood and swapping it out,and hope that Iremember to turn the key to off as soon as I sense the failure to help prevent killing the catalytic converter.
That said, I still feel the disadvantages of this design are outweighed by the many advantages and while still firmly in the Saab camp, would not try to gloss over this issue as Igfeel you have. The all in one DI cassette is a lousy execution. Not a bad idea in theory, but clearly there have been enough of these things gone bad to see that it is not a good design. I'll agree with you that the idewa of direct spark ignition is one of the things that makes the motor run as well as it does, but if yours fails, you might sing a different tune, especially if it fails while you are underway.
