apples and oranges. failed airbags are not the cause of accidents but an unfortunate result of being in one. failed trans usually give some warning. the only one I had [in the 15 cars i've owned] gave me plenty of warning: time to shop around for new wheels. as Mike Lynch pointed out a blown tire is a better analogy to a failed DI. As indicated the issue at hand is a safety issue: sudden loss of power w/o warning. IF [and given probabalities it is a big if] it occurs for eg at speed in a congested area then you'd better hope that your 9-5 is every bit as crashworthy as advertised. you just might need it to be. [as indicated in a previous post I have been in that situation and it's not fun.] my original point still holds: what are we doing paying big bucks [as I did] for a new car with a great rep for safety that persists in keeping a design flaw that could lead to disaster. It seems from the many posts that others share my concern. All of us make our decisions based upon not just available resources but available knowledge and if I would have known of this BEFORE my purchase I might not have bought it. caveat emptor, folks. the irony is I learned of the DI defect from Saab enthusiasts; not Saab critics. [ps--still a honey of a car; too bad that this issue and unreliability in several other areas of my 9-5 after its first year of ownership prompted my selling of it.]
