This spring, as the snow went away, my 9-5 started making some very expensive noises; a grinding sound at low speeds, higher pitched with speed, combined with a gravelly feeling through the seat and a vibration in the steering just as you slow to a stop. In gear or out, made no difference.

So of course I was thinking either wheel bearing (best case) or something nasty in the final drive (pinion bearing or suchlike).

This weekend I cleaned up the summer wheels (5-spoke OEM SAAB alloy with OEM Michelin Energy MXV4) and put them back on. Noise gone. Completely.

It was the tires; 195-65R15 Nokian NRW on steel 15x6 Saturn wheels. They're at the end of their third winter - they show little visible wear. I just have to be ready for the noise when the road dries out....
