Yes, you need to remove the caliper - the dust shield is in the way everywhere else - but you wouldn't need to remove the caliper frame (which you do need to remove when taking the rotor off). After the car is up on a jack stand (and I'd think that one side only is good enough for a "survey" such as this) and the wheel removed, it's just a squeeze with a C clamp and two allen head screws to get the caliper hanging from a bit of wire. Now you can get the caliper onto the rotor. All you need is one measurement at the periphery where the wear is the greatest. If it's not uniform on the one rotor, you would feel major pulsations. If one rotor is worn significantly more than the other, you have other problems and probably a strong pull on braking.
