I know what you are saying and I agree with you. Any tire is a compromise and GS-D3 is a very good one. It did win European Tire of the Year in 2004.

Tire Rack actually classifies this tire as "Maximum Performance Summer." I do disagree with their classification. The Dunlop SP8000 tire is classified as "Ultra High Performance," which is supposed to be one step below "Maximum Performance" category. In my experience, SP8000 has far superior "performance" characteristics compared to GS-D3. Its level of ultimate grip is much higher and the steering feel is far superior for "performance" driving.

I am just saying that for people who look for "Maximum Performance" tire, TireRack's classification may be misleading.

Coming from the world of amateur racing (Solo I and Solo II) I drive very slowly and deliberately on public roads. If I learned anything from my racing experience, it is that smoothness and precision count the most in achieving the ultimate speed. In my everyday driving I can practice many techniques used on the race track. These include taking the proper "line" through corners, looking and planning ahead, proper threshold braking, left foot braking, heel and toe downshifting, double clutching, etc., etc. I accelerate very gradually and most of the time EVERYONE passes me starting from a traffic light. This helps with fuel economy a lot, besides giving me the edge in planning my own "green wave" and being very smooth in managing the available traction. I mostly drive like grandma, except when negotiating challenging corners where I pull away from 99.5% of people by a huge margin. Most people drive too fast. My motto is "go slow to be fast" :-)
