I received a new motor for my '99 9-5SE (about 76,000 mi), due to sludging. Car purchased from dealer with 30,000 miles, who reported it was off lease, and provided proof of the prior owner's oil changes, approximately every 5K miles. I had my oil changed at the dealer's, or the local Saab specialty auto shop every 5-7,000 miles. I can tell you that even with all of the above, it took over 2 months and at least 3 appeals to get SAAB to repair/replace my engine. During the interval the dealer lent me 2 new 9-5's for most of the wait. I paid for a new turbo they said I needed.
From my experience I can tell you that SAAB is very strict concerning receipts and the intervals. I would be surprized if they accept claims of DIY'ers even with receipts. Ultimately, I was told the engine replacement was given to me out of "good will" rather than warranty, and that was with all receipts and oil changes done by professionals. SAAB's claim was that they could not verify proof of oil changes prior to my ownership, eventhough the dealer himself furnished written documentation (with dates and mileages) without which I would not have bought the car. Meanwhile, I love the car, and would purchase another. Has anyone else needed and received a new engine?
