I have a friend that sells cars. He explained it to me in a way that finally makes sense. Either way you still take hit. It's just whether you want to ake the hit on the "front end" or the "back end". When you buy, if you don't want to end up wildly upside down, it's wise to make a decent downpayment. Since I drive more than any lease will allow, I would have to make a pretty big payment at the end when walking away. If you are one of those that never drives over 12,000 miles, doesn't like to modify, then a lease may be your best option. Since I typically drive 20,000+ a year, it would kill me at the end. Last time I bought, I got lucky and they found my an '03 with 1800 miles (this was June '04) that had never been sold. It had been used as a demo in CA. So I started out with a low mileage car. In the year I've owned, I've put my 20,000 on it, but it's still considered reasonable mileage since the car is two years old.
