Dear Tom,
It seems that you are going about it the wrong way. Before moving to synthetic oil did you have the car checked for existing sludge? The problem in most cases is not the pump but the sludge choking the oil strainer this starving the engine. Use 0W40 and change at 5,000 miles without fail.Prior to shifting from one oil to another, please check for sludge in the oil pan, have the pan, strainer etc cleaned, an engine flush will not do any harm, use the new synthetic oil but make sure to change it more fequently than 5000 K for the first 2 or 3 changes as the synthetic will loosen all carbon deposits which will blacken the oil far quickly than normal.
