Alternator dies on interstate

I purchased a 2001 Saab in 2004. This is a car I have always wanted. No need to explain why. Around three weeks ago, after returning from a vacation, my battery (or so I thought) went dead, the AAA service man suggested that since it was the original battery I should consider replacing it. With a voltmeter, my husband tested it and indeed it would not hold a charge. We replaced the battery and once again the car was driving beautifully. That was three weeks ago.
Here's the scary part. Today, while driving on Interstate 84 East heading towards Hartford, Ct., doing over 70 in the left hand lane, without any warning the alternator dies. The only warning I had was the resounding " bing"- after that all lights and everything went to black. I realize, while losing power that I must safely pull over onto the median and off the highway. Fortunately, the guy behind me must have realized that I was slowing down without my break lights. As you can appreicate, I am both relieved and dismayed at the same time. Relieved, because I was able to safely get the car off the road, and yet dismayed because there was virtually no warning. My question is? Is there something I missed? How should I have known this was happening probably beginning around three weeks ago? With all the sophisticated software enabling the owner to be warned about any failures, I can't believe this could happen. I can only say that I missed an earlier warning and now I am trying to ascertain what that is or was.
Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
