When an alternator dies, a charged battery should be able to power the car a little while. Of course this time is determined by how many things are being powered (i.e. a/c, blower speed, stereo). The fuel pump and ignition will also add to the "drain" on the battery.
You should have noticed a warning symbol if the alternator was not charging the battery.
I'm not sure what voltmeter test you used to determine it would not hold a charge. I've also charged a battery over-night and then tested it with a load to determine wheter it had any capacity. Perhaps this is what you meant.
Alternators can be ruined by hooking the cables up backwards (post to negative) when jumping.
I doubt your charged battery would last three weeks, more like three hours if you were lucky.
