VW folks come up to Saab.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Tue, 9 Aug 2005 16:41:29 In Reply to: Passat wagon or 9-5?, Dan in NY, Tue, 9 Aug 2005 13:15:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
VW folks shop for a lot of Saabs. It seems to me to be a natural thing as VW folks wanted something a little different, as do Saab folks, out of the mainstream so to speak. A SportWagon isn't offered by all that many folks anymore, no more Camry or Accord.
A new 2005 9-5 Linear with comfort pacakge, roof and heated seats, and metallic paint, MSRP $36,740, is down to only $28,340 after the GM Employee and rebates.
The Passat for me, looks very square station wagon ish, the 9-5 SportWagons are well, sportier. I think you're going from the bottom of the heap, to the top of the heap when you consider reliability of VW vs Saab. The 9-5 is really a competitor for the Passat's bigger brother, the A6, the next size up. Even a 185 hp 2.3 LPT Linear will feel stronger than a V6 Passat. VW does a good job of disgusing the extreme front weight bias of the inline engine all the way out front chassis, so the Saab is definitely the better balanced better handling car.
The Saab 9-5 will soldier on a few more years, although 2006 will be a fresh look inside and out, but still a 9-5. The Passat will be all new soon, if not already, which includes ditching the inline north/south engine setup in favor of the Golf/Jetta transverse setup.
And you wanna' be cool right? All the cool people drive SportWagons....If you're shopping used, don't reject a V6 (or 4 cyliner) Arc or an Aero.
BTW, Certified Pre Owned Saabs have cheap money right now, 0.9% 36 months, 1.9% 36 months and 2.9% 60 months, at no charge (but no loan profit either) to the dealer.
