I own both in sedan form. The Passat seems solid with high quality materials and good handling but it will disappoint you. I bought the Passat new in 2000 and my extended warranty paid for itself twice. Failing suspension components, mass air flow sensors $$ and failing engine gaskets and a complicated and expensive timing belt replacement procedure ($$$$) that involves removing the front bumper has led me to a 4 cylinder Saab as a second car. According to IIHS.org in real world accident death rates the Passat has one of the lowest death rates of any automobile.

That may have more to do with driver behavior but I like to hedge my bets so I still own the Passat.
And my dealership experience is like what others have said here. VW is really poor in that regard, while Saab has been great.
