Thanks for all the great feedback, I appreciate it! In the past I too encountered the terrible VW dealership treatment when we owned a 99 New Jetta with the base 2.0 engine. But that car worked great -- ran it to 77k from new with but one problem (O2 sensor). It was easy to live with. This good experience is what has us thinking about the Passat.
Our experience with a modern SAAB was ok, but it didn't fill me with confidence. W bought a 2000 9-3 with 28k, sold it at 44k. From the start, the clutch made an odd noise. Although it was under warranty, our dealer was not forthcoming about checking into this problem as a waranty issue, and we weren't prepared to part with $900, sop we lived with the noise. Additionally: the high beam relay started to fritz, we got a few CEL's here and there, and the seat adjustment knob broke off. Thankfully for us, the well-known binding heater knob problem had already been addressed. Our 1993 900s feels much more solid than the 9-3 did. All of this is to say that I am a bit leary of the care and feeding with a newer SAAB. But, I appreciate the feedback from this BB and will surely consider it!
