Another SaabNet contributor from whom I purchased a Saab 900 in the past and who has personally owned 40 Saabs advised me that my persistent rear tire wearout problem was caused by the negative camber specification published for the 9-5 model. He convinced me that the car is sufficiently stable enough at a 0 degree setting to give a chance for a set of tires to last way more than the 6-8,000 miles I can only seem to get with the three brands I've tried in three years on my 1999 9-5. I just put two pairs of rear top shims on my 1999 9-5 last night. At only 0.3mm thickness each, I'll have to wait until I get the car back on an alignment machine to see how much difference a total 0.6 mm shimming each side makes. At $9 each, available only from the Saab dealer, I made a traced outline of this surgically precise Swedish made part so that I can make my own, if need be, out of not so precious sheet steel...!!! The installation job is not that hard. Finishing up after dark last night, I couldn't really eyeball much difference, but will have to wait for a reputable alignment check. Now to find yet another set of rear tires and hope for better results.. I'll post on this later.
