Given the high gas prices, I recently adjusted my driving style to see the affect on my car's gas mileage. The result: In the past two weeks my in-car MPG indicator has gone from about 22.5 mpg to 28 mpg. How? Don't slam on the gas. For the past two weeks I've kept my eye on the boost gauage and basically limited my acceraltion so that the gas gauge doesn't turn on too much.

At first it took a while to get used to slow driving through the city, but then I noticed something. In city traffic I end up catching up with the same cars driving along-side me 95% of the time. Even when they raced from red light to red light, and weaved in & out of traffic, I'd nearly always catch up with them eventually. The biggest difference is I usually arrive at my final destination a lot more relaxed than I used to, so I'm inclined to keep driving this way anyway.

It's taken me a full 2 weeks to adjust to this new driving style, but it's almost second nature now, and the car's getting 28mpg. This is one advantage of the Turbo-4 has other large displacement engines. If you're driving a V8 engine you're likely have poor mileage regardless of driving style. The Turbo-4 at least gives us the option to get good economy when we want it, and then slam on the gas for those moments when you want smile-on-your-face accerlation.

Thanks SAAB.

(My commute each-way is about 20min long, 10min of that making my way through 10-15 stop signs/lights through Washington DC. The last 10 minute is spent driving 70mph on the highway) Subtract about 1 mpg if the AC is on, which is hasn't been recently.

For those that don't trust that indicator, I reset my odometer at my last fill, so when I next fill up (using the same station&pump) I'll calculate the 'true' mpg.
