Agreed....DIY is a hobby. Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Sat, 26 Nov 2005 10:23:55 In Reply to: Is DIY a hobby or a means to save money?, J, Sat, 26 Nov 2005 09:59:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
DIY is a hobby. I suggest that if you're not interested in doing this as a hobby.....don't. I've been getting my hands dirty for years. My observation has been that most guys who are into DIY started young at least DIY, and often do some sort of work that includes similar challenges. Some women start late only because they were never given the opportunity at an earlier age...and were often discouraged from getting their hads greasy.
When DIY is taken seriously, the cost of tools adds up over the years. On the bright side, DIY does pay for itself. Yesterday, I did the front rotors and pads on my wife's 2004 9-5 ARC....DIY cost $300 for all OEM parts; the dealer quote was $750.00! There are many other DIY projects that pay for the tools also.
Not all procedures pay off quite so well. And, some procedures require specialized equipment and training. Eg.: I don't mount and balance tires, or service the A/C.
My opinion is that DIY should first be approached as a hobby...the repair savings is just a nice added bonus.
