I run the same vehicle with National Ovations, which are a good all season tire, with great snow performance - but they are not that great on ice.
Not too much you can do about icy conditions except avoid them. I check for ice at low speeds by hard braking, to see if the ABS starts up - if it does, then I slow down at lot.
If you were trying to get up a steep slope, with any kind of load except the driver, remember that with front wheel drive you get to a point where it is just too steep to climb. I suppose you could back up the hill, slowly - my dad once lived on a farm where you could only go up the road backward because the carburettor would starve if you went up front first!
Studded tires are not legal in most parts of Canada - but again, how much can they help on a steep hill if the weight of the car is not on the driven wheels!
If you have the Winter button, use it to start on ice, but not to merge into traffic... it does get me going.
I now have another wagon, an MY05 with ESP, and even though it had Pirelli P6 (about 10k km wear), it drives quite well in bad conditions. I did a direct comparison of the two wagons yesterday in about six inches of snow over ice patches. The ESP worked really well for starts.
Good luck,
