That old post was for something else,..... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Pls help clarify: tranny Flush vs drain/fill, Wagon Man, Wed, 14 Dec 2005 14:19:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
probably for tightening the tranny oil cooler fittings on the radiator, and I was removing the fan shroud assembly to access them. Ignore that posting.
I have only done the drain and fill method. For this you will need 4 quarts of Dexron-III transmission fluid. Drain out the old fluid through the drain plug located at the extreme bottom of the tranny case on the face which is towards the engine block. It is a 24mm hex nut and is well guarded by tranny case reinforcements. It is a turn 1/12, flip wrench, turn 1/12, flip..... Luckily the nut becomes finger loose very quickly. A 24mm offset box-end wrench is said to make this job very easy, but a 24mm open end wrench is much cheaper.
Add three quarts of new fluid through the dip stick tube (funnel required), check fluid level as per owner's manual, add more fluid from 4th quart only as needed.
Others have done the flush method. I believe you need to disconnect one/both of the external oil cooler lines and: a) have a flushing device/pump which will pump new fluid into the transmisiion forcing all the old fluid out, or b) run the engine and use the tranny's internal pump to force the old fluid out while simultaneously pouring new fluid in through the dip stick tube at a rate fast enough to keep the tranny's pump from cavitating. That pretty much explains why I have not done this method, but see postings by those who have done this to be sure.
