If the fluid looks and smells good, then go ahead and change it. I wouldn't use anything but AMSOIL synthetic ATF, but then I'm biased.
Drain out the 3.7 qts or so that comes out when you pull the plug.
Replace that amount, and drive a few miles to mix.
You've now replaced about 1/2 the fluid.
Repeat the process. Now you have about 3/4 new fluid.
Were it mine, I'd do it one more time, and you'll be about 7/8 new fluid.
Then plan to change what is in the pan every 50,000 miles or so.
If the current fluid looks or smells nasty, get a case of fresh non-synthetic ATF and change the fluid about 3-4 times. Then put in the synthetic.
I've been doing this with Saab transmissions for about 18 years now, or however long it has been since AMSOIL came out with synthetic ATF.
