It should be but it is still many mechanics that don't know how to use or own a digital lab scope.
With today's cars, it is not enough to just see if it is power and ground going to and from a circuit using a test light or volt/ohm meter.
You have to know if it is a battery power supply wire or a stepped down 2 or 5 volt supply wire and what that circuit is doing when the car is running and the circuit is loaded up.
Many times on today's cars, the problem will not show up in the shop but you have to drive the car and monitor several circuits while driving and be able to record those signals so that you can replay them back in the shop.
My labscope can keep track of 4 signals at the same time, which might be over kill, but it comes in handy in the beginning of a fault tracing session when you don't know which part of the car that konks out.
My labscope cost about $5000.00 but it is other (newer) ones out there that use a regular computer as it's base to display results. A good one of those can be had for about $2000.00 plus the cost of a laptop.
