I've had a 2001 9-5 since new purchased at Burlingame Saab. Their service is definitely very good. They always had a loaner available (I think I had to specifiy that I needed one when I made the appointment) and their staff seems to get it right the first time, with no haggling or waiting for them to try one fix then try another.

For the retail sales, I suppose It's really where you find the best deal. However I crave dealing with people who know their stuff. I have been in the hunt for a new or new to me Saab 9-5 for 6 months or so. Mine has 72,000 and while it's never stranded me, I drive long distances and crave the newness security. I did the Saabusa.com 'request a quote' a while back and the only response I got (and I'm in the bay area too) was from oddly, the new kid on the block, Ellis Brooks in San Francisco, from a TERRIFIC guy named Jose Rivera. He's really attentive, knows about the car (Park Royale in Marin thought I might like a Hummer since there wasn't a 9-5 wagon in stock, NO kidding!!) stuck with me with model updates for the past 6 months, alerted me of potentially appealing Certified stock that arrived, and has really bowled me over. I considered a new BMW also, but oddly, I'm really loyal to giving this guy my biz. I finally got another response from Burlingame Saab after two weeks from a gal that said, "gosh, we're really busy, you should just come in and see me for a quote." Duh. The whole point was to avoid that.

I'd also avoid Dirito Saab. I tired for 45 minutes to buy a tail light bulb from the guy in parts, and I tell you, I've never met a bigger dolt. Sorry, but please... Those that know their stuff get my business.

Back to your specifics.. I think some dealers offer loaners and some don't. Check first.
Reliability: Better than my last Volvo, by far. VASTLY better than the MINI Cooper we tolerated for 12 months of hell. Seems about equal to our 2002 BMW 3 wagon.
OnStar is a treat. Most on this website think it's for blondes (whatever) but I find it incredibly helpful. Note that if you buy used with OnStar it will not work after 12/31/07. Period. The system requirements are changing and the 9-5 is not updateable.

Best of luck, sorry for the long words.
