Same block and heads - that's about all that's in common. The cam belt drive was re-engineered on behalf of Cadillac (who used it in the Catera and early CTS models) for 75K belt life (Saab specs it at 60,000 - an even 100,000 km). Of course it's 3 liter versus 2.5 for the NG. With the asymmetric low pressure turbo it finally shows some low rpm grunt. IMO it's an uninspiring design but one that is not prone to sludge problems. It's worst feature was it's cost relative to it's performance, but on the used market that issue that doesn't seem to be an issue, especially considering you're dealing with a 7 year old one.
One subtle advantage is the V-6 suffered a relatively late introduction, you won't be buyint a "1999" model that was built in 1997.
