Read around on this board and find out the minimum thickness of the pads before replacement, then have the dealership show you (literally stand over their sholder) while they measure the thickness of your pads and show you. If your pads are below spec have them done, otherwise, save your money.
As for the rotors, what did they tell you to indicate you need new rotors. Are you feeling pulsating brakes or something (warped rotors). I've had at least two dealerships try to convince me to get a complete brake job (pads and rotors) back when my car was at 55K miles and 60K miles. Last week, finally at 85K miles, my brakes started to squeal - the wear indicator finally started rubbing the rotor. *Now* it's time to change the pads. Unlike your wife, for most of those miles I was neither a conservative nor a slow driver (I do drive much more sensibly now), and yet I got an additional 30K miles on those pads & rotors. (2000 Aero)
Unfortunatley, because I was just about to drive home to MA for the holidays the following day, I headed off from DC anyway, planning on getting the entire brake job done when I returned. Half-way through Jersey, the pads squealing told me I need to get the pads ASAP. I called a Boston SAAB dealership. They wanted $250 to do the pads alone. I asked if I could drop it off and wait for my car, which was my subtle way of asking how many hours or labor they were charging me for. They told me it would take upwards of 2 1/2 hours and they'd give me a loaner car. Surprised at their labor estimate, I called an indie I used to use when I used to lived in Boston. He told me to stop by the dealership, pick up the SAAB parts, and he'd install them for me.
The 2005 SAAB pads (the new low-dust part number) cost me $96. You can buy them from several SAABNET sponors for $20 less. The indy installed the pads in less than 30 minutes. When I mentioned to the indy that I'd soon be getting the rotors soon, he had a puzzled look on his face and responded "Why would you do that? These rotors are fine. Sure, they're a little gouged, but they'll at least last you through this set of pads"
I guess only time will tell.
