Do give the automatic a good workout. The high torque 9-5 turbos are well suited to the automatics, much more so than any 9000. That sport button on the auto will keep many die hard stick fans happy. And if you consider an automatic, you'll have, oh probably, ten times as many cars to chose from as stick SportWagons are the rarest Saabs.

My last special order stick Aero SportWagon guy, with whom I went to the Aero Academy with, now says he woulda' got an automatic if he had it to do all over again. And a couple of other die hard stick guys at the Aero Academy had a chance to live in their spouses automatic 9-5 or another automatic 9-5, and grew to prefer the auto. As I said the auto is well suited to the car and the sport button really satisfies.

Speaking of Aeros, are you an Aero kinda' guy? Do fat tires and stiffer, lower suspension speak to you? For many this is the only Saab to consider. The 2000-2001 Aeros are the 2.3 HOT (high output turbos) with 230hp.

If not an Aero you'll have the choice of a 2.3lpt (light pressure turbo) with 175ish hp or a 3.0 V6 asymetrically turborcharged for 200hp. The 2.3lpt feels plenty strong until the Aero asserts it's power at higher speeds. The 2.3 fours come stick or auto, the V6s all come automatic. many folks are fond of the V6s.

No bad choices. The V6s and the Aeros come standard with the premium package which includes memeory seats, auto-dim mirror and Harmon Kardon sound upgrade, nice stuff, but not a deal breaker on a 2.3lpt. Some model years did not have heated seats as standard, they were optional as were the vented seats, so if that's important pay attention and don't assume they all have heated seats.
